    A Business Consultant on Decision Support - R&D will be responsible for influencing the design, development, and operation of the Southwest Airlines schedule through first class analytics using advanced techniques, strong visualizations, and excellent data storytelling. The person holding this title should be an innovative thinker with strong technical skills and applied knowledge from relevant industries, leveraging these strengths to help the continued training of the Team.

    • Use extensive technology skills (SQL, Alteryx, Tableau, and Excel) and SWA business knowledge to build, update, and maintain scalable applications, datasets, and automated processes to support Department
    • Implement quality checks to ensure processes are running as scheduled and impact to performance is tracked
    • Recommend, test, analyze, and report changes to settings in Network Planning systems
    • Utilize business and technology expertise to assist Technology Department with development and maintenance of Network applications; including data infrastructure design and maintenance
    • Utilize appropriate software management procedures, standards, and best practices as defined by Team
    • Serve as subject matter expert for assigned tasks/projects
    • Provide appropriate written documentation of tools, processes, and projects
    • Present project updates, strategy decisions and new initiatives to Network Initiatives team and other Director-level SWA Leaders when appropriate
    • Assist in training Network Planning Analysts on department’s analysis tools and data sources

    • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.


    • Bachelor’s Degree (Required): Preferrably in Operations Research, Engineering, Computer Science, MIS, Math, Statistics, Finance, Economics or Business.
    • Advanced Degree preferred.



    • Required a minimum 5 Years experience in one or more of the following areas:

      • Applied Statistics,
      • Operations Research,
      • Business Analytics,
      • Transportation or Shipping network design,
      • Computer programming,
      • Forecasting,
      • Supply Chain Management


      Experience should also include Intermediate experience in (required):

      • Structured Query Language (SQL);
      • Alteryx or other data integration and blending tools;


      • Tableau or other business intelligence/visualization tools.


    • Experience with statistical software packages such as R is preferred.
    • Expertise in Network Planning or Revenue Management/Technology preferred.


    • Most activities conducted in typical office environment which requires light lifting to overhead files and shelves

    • Must be able to communicate accurately and concisely both orally and written in English
    • Must be able to work under strict time constraints
    • Must be detail oriented
    • Must be self-motivated and be able to perform with minimal direct supervision


    • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines.
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
    • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
    • Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary and sensitive Company information


    • Airline or commercial airline experience
